IMPLEMENTATION OF MULTI-CARRIER TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS WITH COHERENT DETECTION

Maurice O'Sullivan1; 1Ciena, Canada.
The recent realization of high rate conversion between analog and digital domains together with the development of methods and technologies for linear transduction between electrical and optical domains has spurred a rapidly growing effort to exploit the capacity of optical fiber with transceivers enabled by digital signal processing and coherent detection. I will describe implemented multi-carrier transmission systems based on coherent detection as well as some of the enabling technologies with deployed examples. I will briefly explore some of the distinctions between these and conventional systems in practical deployments and give a view of engendered opportunities.
